Nightly Gathering

January 23, 2009 at 12:41 AM (Family, Film, Future, My past, Sister, Travel, University)

I dreamt of Claire Bennet in Heroes. I dreamt I was with my brother and sister watching Heroes together. Then I woke up and stared into the darkness of my hotel room and realized we will never get to watch shows together again. At least not regularly.

I went into the shower and thought about how long we’ve been doing this. And I remembered the photos our dad took of us watching shows. Since before my sister was borne (just my bro and I ) and when my sister was just a baby (that’s the three of us), we’ve been watching shows together (Smurf, Jam, Sesame Street, Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles…).

Then I remembered at 10 we started watching shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer together. I never understood their jokes then.

At 15, we watched my ‘first’ anime – Trigun. Of course 2008 December during the Doraemon promotion in Queensbay did I only realize that my first anime was Doraemon, not Trigun. But since Trigun we haven’t stopped watching. Cooking Master Boy, Yakitate Japan, Haibane Renmei, Great Teacher Onizuka, Full Metal Panic… They were countless.

At 17, my brother left to UK. My sister and I got busy with senior years in high school, training, college… We didn’t watch much together, other than Peach Girl. I was pretty sad at the time, having left Yakitate Japan half-watched and my brother gone. But those days my sister and I grew closer. I also found Guo Yi.

In 2007, when I was 19, my brother graduated and came back. I was so happy that we could continue Yakitate Japan! That was so much fun. We also watched a lot of new stuff, this time more mysterious scary shows instead of the usual high school romance and crazy comedy (although we watched a few of those too like Nodame, Clannad and Slam Dunk). We also moved into American shows, now that there are so many good ones out there, such as CSI (usually without my sister) and Heroes and House! All those memories!  There were so much fun, night after night gathering in my brother’s room at 10 for more shows.

Then this morning I woke up  in the dark and realized that things wouldn’t never be that way again. By the time I return in July my brother would be in the two years full time training. After those two years, I’m not sure how the future would be. Maybe one of us would no longer stay with our parents. And hence the gathering can no longer happen. I took those days for granted, never realizing that they were reaching their end.  Before I knew it, it ended. And here I am waking up in the morning without them around.

RIP our 11 year nightly gathering…

Academic Awards Presentation Ceremony

June 24, 2008 at 11:14 PM (Academics, College, My past, Sister)

For good performances in the first two semesters of each year, I am awarded this certificate at the academic awards presentation ceremony.

Today was the fourth time I’ve attended to receive my cert, and sadly I would say although this is the best time I’ve dressed, I don’t have any nice pictures. Sad sad… Anyway here’s the collection of all the times I’ve attended. I started out looking like a fool but today I think I looked better :D

First time looking fresh out of high school.

Second time

Third time with the best picture :D

Fourth time

After studying in INTI for a few semesters,  my sister finally could go up there to accept her Dean’s Honor Roll! She worked so hard and desired to get onto this list so much that she made it! I’m very proud of her.

The Moffatts

June 22, 2008 at 10:23 PM (Music, My past) (, , , , )

[Note: This post used to be titled "Jonas Brothers of the late 1990s'" but due to its misleading and consequently disappointing nature, especially to the real fans of the JB, I decided to change it.]

I used to be crazy over boy bands when I was in primary school till about form 3 I think. There were the Backstreet Boys, Hanson, LFO, A1, Five, so on and so forth I can’t even remember them! Few minutes ago while surfing Youtube I suddenly was lead to this Canadian band I used to love so much in primary school called the Moffatts.

And suddenly I’m 10 again, lol! “I miss you like crazy” still sounds as how I remembered it but “The girl of my dreams” did not! It’s kinda surprising, to find the song sounding different from how I remembered it. There were so many links to their other songs and I can barely remember any of them. I guess over the years I have pretty much forgotten about them.

So now I’m just looking through some of the videos. Man, videos then looked really crappy and the songs were so kiddish! The teen boys of the late 1990s had long hair half dyed, while early 2000s it was all about the spikes; and now you gotta feel emo and have your hair cover half your face to look sad. Either that or be a pretty boy.

Kinda fun, going back to the good ol’ days. There were some funny comments about how people thought they were the Jonas Brothers when I’m sure back then they would have been only about 8 years old? Now I finally understand why people dislike boy bands, cos I am not particularly swayed by the Jonas Brothers’ songs. And although “When you look me in the eye” is still ok, it’s definitely not something I would like to listen to everyday over and over again.

Here’s the Moffatts at 14-15 (I was 10)

And at 16-17 or so. (I think I was 12)

So here’s the “Jonas Brothers’” of my time – The Moffatts with “I miss you like crazy” ( Damn I feel old!)

————————————————————————————–

[After watching their videos and reminiscing...]

Woah I’m so happy going back to all their old videos! I am starting to remember their songs. Reminisce the old favourite songs that I used to hear back to back on my cassette player [ancient technology]. Those days downloading music from the internet was probably the activities of aliens. So here I am going to display the videos of my top favourite songs by them. Excuse them for the disgusting video quality, it’s not their fault that technology wasn’t as advanced as it is today.

Bang Bang Boom (one of their last videos ever, if not the last)

I don’t want you to want me

Crazy (one of my very favourite)

If you only knew – Gil ft the Moffatts

Girl of my dreams (most favourite!)

Let the music heal your soul

Everyone should take a look at this video, cos the late 1990s boy band hand moves are just too much, the way they wear their shades are just painful to look at, Justin Timberlake still had maggi hair and Aaron Carter had baby voice. Just watch it.
